Renewable Energy

We support wind and solar energy.

In 2017, Amazon Wind Farm became the first large-scale wind energy producer in NC. And right in our backyard! The wind farm’s 104 turbines stretch across 22,000 acres of farm land in Perquimans and Pasquotank counties and produce enough electricity to power 61,000 homes. We salute the visionary farmers and county officials who recognized the economic and environmental impact of the project to the community, and made it happen.

In 2018 at the Green Saves Green Expo, we organized public tours of the wind farm that sold out! Tour participants enjoyed the opportunity to experience the turbines up close and speak to the farmers who allowed the turbines to be installed on their land. The goal of the Expo and tours was to raise awareness of the benefits of renewable energy to the environmental and the local economy.

As part of our outdoor student environmental program, we have taken students on a field trip to the wind farm to learn about solar energy. For information on this and other field trip resources in northeastern NC, click here.
