2024
ANNUAL REPORT
Green Saves Green is an all-volunteer, nonprofit environmental action organization inspiring everyone to care for our local environment.
In 2024, we completed our six-year river water quality monitoring project, moved forward with our paddle trails proposal, held our first Earth Day outdoor environmental education event, gave away our 1,000th native tree, removed more than 2,500 pounds of litter, and awarded Action Grants for a preschool pollinator garden and a Pasquotank River biodiversity study. It was a busy year!
Albemarle Watershed Watch final sample
In 2018 we began collecting water samples and recording data as part of a region-wide effort to determine the cause and find solutions for local algal blooms. The data and samples were sent to the NC Department of Agriculture and researchers at UNC and NCSU. We’re expecting a report on the findings next spring. We sincerely thank Rodney Johnson for leading this project and all the dedicated individuals who participated.
Pasquotank paddle trails get a boost
After more than a year of meeting, scouting, and mapping, our paddle trails initiative took a big step forward. We worked with Pasquotank County and Elizabeth City to apply for a NC Great Trails Grant, which will pay for a feasibility study to professionally evaluate potential launch sites on the Pasquotank River and Knobbs Creek – the crucial first steps of trail development. The city expects to be notified if the grant is approved in March next year.
Great learning done outdoors
For our inaugural Earth Day event, we invited 20 middle school students to test river water quality, search for macroinvertebrates, and explore a wetland trail. The students collected and analyzed water samples, donned waders and used nets to scoop up river mud, and learned to identify trees.
Free tree giveaway hits 1,000
What a terrific urban forest all the Plant A Valentine baby redbud, dogwood, red maple, live oak, and willow oak trees we’ve given away will make when they grow up in the neighborhood. Trees make the best Valentines!
2,500 pounds of litter picked up
Schools, families, congregations, organizations, and many more helped clean up their campuses and communities.
2 Action Grants awarded
Our Action Grant program is for students and educators who have an environmental project in mind and want to take action. This year’s grants were awarded to a preschool to create a teaching pollinator garden, and an Elizabeth City State University graduate student to study the biodiversity in the Pasquotank River and Dismal Swamp.
Thank you to our members, volunteers, and partners for helping us achieve all we did in 2024.
